Designated Funds

Establishing a Designated Fund provides you a wonderful way to give back to one or more specific organizations that have touched your life.

Your gift provides more than just funding - your favorite organization will benefit from KCF's investment stewardship and ability to manage endowment funds. Because KCF handles the details, the nonprofit organization's staff is freed up to focus on its mission. And, KCF can facilitate even the most complex forms of giving, such as planned gifts or gifts of appreciated stock or real estate. You can add to the fund at any time. If the organization you select ceases to exist or changes in mission, the fund can be redirected so that it continues to address your charitable intent.

How designated funds work

First step with a Designated Fund is to identify an organization you wish to benefit. This type of fund is favored by individuals and families who want to leave a legacy of support for specific nonprofits they care about.

To establish your designated fund, you make an irrevocable contribution of personal assets—which could include cash, stock, real estate and more (see the many options). Your contribution is recorded as a donation to KCF, and the balance will be reflected in your fund account.

When you contribute to your designated fund, you may be eligible to claim an itemized tax deduction for federal and/or state income tax purposes. Because KCF and other designated fund sponsors are public charities, your donation is considered a tax-deductible charitable contribution. The amount of the deduction will depend on several factors, including the type of asset donated and how long you have owned it. This arrangement allows you to plan your gift so that you can take the tax deduction when it makes sense for you and to recommend grants to your favorite charitable organizations at any point in the future.

You can name your fund anything you would like. You can also structure it however you like. It can be an endowment, in which only the investment proceeds are granted out to the beneficiary organization. Or it can be spent down on a schedule you decide on.

You can recommend an investment strategy for the assets in your designated fund by selecting an allocation from among the pre-approved investment offerings. The assets in your fund are invested following your recommendations. Any investment growth is tax-free, giving you the potential to create even more philanthropic capital for grantmaking.

According the granting schedule you determine, the KCF board issues grants to the beneficiary organization. This regularity provides the receiving nonprofit with a sustainable and dependable source of support. KCF handles all the administrative details, including managing specific qualifications that you may establish for grant disbursements.
